My grandmother gave me the movie 'Dune' and it was so obscure I just wanted to read the book to actually get the movie. Well...I got hooked. The Dune Chronicles (there are six books, I just finished the last) are very detailed and realistic when it comes to human emotions. A bit sordid, yes. But all over quite wonderful. The first time you read Dune it's a bit confusing, it's hard to tell what they're talking about, but once you get later in the series it becomes thoroughly enjoyable. It's one of the best science fiction books I believe I've ever read.

Knowing you I think you'd love them. Frank Herbert is described as the Tolkien of science fiction.

Probably not, it takes some love of that genre to read these books. Just like any other book.
